In the fall of 2015, Volusia County Orchid Society member and American Orchid Society Judge, Mrs. Jennifer Reinoso was appointed by the VCOS Board of Directors to work in conjunction with Dr. Cynthia Bennington on an Orchid Project at Stetson University. VCOS has donated many plants and funded this project working closely with Dr. Bennington and her students. The area is contained at the Science Center at the Stetson University Campus, downtown Deland.
For many years VCOS members led by Mrs. Jennifer Reinoso has worked in conjunction with the Department of Transportation to preserve and relocate wild orchids throughout all of Volusia County along the highways and areas under construction.
In 2015, VCOS has donated funds to the University of Florida Extension Center in DeLand , Master Gardeners Program for equipment. We also donated funds for the third year to the Art Haus Center of Port Orange, Florida. The center works with youth involved in Art projects. Their work was displayed at our annual show in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Beginning in 2016, Mrs. Denise Christensen, VCOS Board member has spearheaded two new youth programs working with the 4-H youth members. This project is funded by the Volusia County Orchid Society. One group will be taught floral design by Mrs. Christensen and the other group will be learning Orchid culture and care. These young people will be attending our monthly meetings learning their crafts. Their work will be on display and judged at our annual Orchid Show and Expo and at the Volusia County Fair in November.
VCOS sponsors an annual award for a Best Orchid entry at the Volusia County Fair. We also have an annual information booth at the fair as pictured in the photo.
Volusia County Orchid Society member Sharon Anderson was awarded the 2015 Member of the Year award by the Volusia County Fair Association at the annual Banquet held January 7, 2016 as pictured in this photo.
